Platonists Turned Wet

I was never into watching National Day Parades. But since my (long lost) secondary school mates got tickets to VIP seats, and since Yun loves me so much and was so keen about bringing me along, and since I could prolly get a few shots, why not?

Yeah, and so today, with courtesy of Kendrick, I attended NDP 2008 rehersal.

The weather wasn't good to start with. From where we headed off, to where we got seated down, it was drizzling the whole way through. And as soon as we got our hands on the goodie bags, we desperately rummaged through everything in sought after the only sleazy shelter available - the poncho.

Most of the audiences were armed with at least double protection. Red garbage-bag-like-ponchos + national day bling cap + umbrellas (triple protection for some).

Candidly CUI.

The rain totally dampened my mood, like how it dampened my hair (and my top and my seat and my shorts and my sandals). But fortunately (due to a possibility of our cursings and swearings being heard), the rain ended just moments before the performance started.

It wasn't really obvious from the angle we perceived, but if you look carefully, the military groups actually did a formation shaped in 'NDP 08'.

The airshow performance is always one of the parts I would eagerly anticipate during every NDP. Though the antics are almost the same every year, they are still loud mind-blowing stuffs to gawk at.

It was a pity they cancelled the heart shape stunt (or whatever you call that) everyone was raving about due to the unforeseen weather. Awww too bad!

The skies then started to get heavy again after 6pm. And much to our despair, though expected, the rain made a comeback at around 7.15pm. This time it hit us even harder :(

Yun Me
Cloaked ourselves back into the thin garbage bags most unwillingly. (I know our expressions potray otherwise in this picture.)

My mood took another major downturn to its lowest, with undesired raindrops pelting all over me, and on my camera. Snapped a few more shots before sheltering my stuffs and relenting back to FEEL the moment.

Trying to minimize contact with the rain and indulging in some self-pity, most of us were rapt in fending for ourselves, so much so that we had already forgotten about the performance still carrying on live before our eyes. I seriously feel for those people who braved the rain in the open stage but come to think of it, I'm ashamed to admit that I was also guilty of the typical act.

Fireworks display was at the finale, but the pictures however were a tad disappointing. Half blinded by the shower, I could only shoot at random using my compact, with a wet finger against an (also) wet and slippery shutter button.

We left the parade early at 8.30pm sharp to avoid the human jam. Tidied up (our wet look) and went for dinner at Ichiban Boshi @ Esplanade.

The overall NDP was quite a bore, and to me, it's just a huge lump sum of (our) money dunked into expensive costumes and performances which turn out to be similar every year. Be that as it may, what really mattered was the experience and the company I had. Though our spirits and image were tarnished by the hateful rain, it was quite memorable thinking back about it.

P.S. Thanks Poh Ling for lending me your DSLR, though I couldn't get any pretty shots. Hopefully I'll return next year and by then, hopefully I'll be equipped with my own DLSR mounted with telephoto lens!
