My answer is, “No, I haven’t found a job, and I’m not looking out for one at the moment, thank you very much.” Wait a sec.. Who on mother earth told you I’m not working?

I’m not pinpointing anyone in particular here. Just that I got that question a significant number of times, so I thought I shall write in defense of myself (and other freelance designers / self-employed).

1. Freelancers ≠ bummers.

Whenever I tell people I’m freelancing, they will think I lead a damn shiok life. After all, I seem like I do have time to hang out with friends, eat good food, update this space, blah blah. Yes, I admit that I do. Well, that’s because I have a life and I can manage my time (ahem, pretty efficiently). What people don’t see is when I sit in front of computer till my eyes wither dry to rush for deadlines and running from places to places to meet clients and stuffs like that. It’s not THAT easy.

2. No weekends & public holidays.

There isn’t a single day that has gone past without working (except for my Bangkok trip). I don’t get Monday blues nor do I countdown to TGIFs, cos’ everyday feels the same to me – yet another working day.

3. Bao Kah Liao.

I’m my own designer, sales manager, account manager, project manager, traffic manager, admin, marketer, HR, finance, debt collector, cleaner, pantry auntie. Yeah, you get the idea.

4. Not stable lei..

Oh, don’t worry. Stability is traded off for flexibility. I am not bound to fixed working hours at a fixed working compound, therefore I’m not bound to a fixed paycheck too. This, I only have myself to fall back on. I slack and take my own sweet time I earn less lah. I chiong I earn more lah. Simple logic. Most importantly, as long as I’m still able to continuously give my parents money I happy already.

I work hard, I play hard. Because I deserve it :)

If you have friends boyfriends girlfriends mother father aunties uncles grandmothers grandfathers clients business partners flings god-knows-who looking for design services, remember to refer me ok! Oh the guys are my poly mates btw. And did I not mention that Jan is together with one of them, and how I just love having a girl (my best friend some more!) in future clique outings.

Coffee session with Kel. Speaking to older guys always open up my perception in some ways, but I felt all the more jaded about life.

Ever since my failed relationship of four and a half years, not only did I lose someone, I lost a big part of myself too. I find myself much colder and less passionate towards a lot of things, especially human relations, and I have developed a CBF attitude. I’ve also see things a lot differently now, to a point that you can either say I’ve lost faith, or I’ve simply learnt to let go. I’m unsure if this change is good, but for now, I dig my life as long as my drive for design and career doesn’t die.

(Not that I don’t do previously, but MORE, you know.)

Each time I enter my house carpark, park my scooter, and take off my helmet, I’ll grin to myself because I know that I can go home and see my family in one piece (CHOY! But ya).

Anyway, I found a box that totally matches my bike colour!

I was so bent on spraying my scooter yellow the moment I bought it, but after seeking a few real life opinions, everyone thinks that I shouldn’t do it cos’ the current paint still looks damn new. Alright then, I shall wait till my birthday in 2012 to do it. Something to look forward to!

Now, exactly half of the year has gone past, and Imma do a quick check on my “resolutions” in 2011.

  1. Work towards a senior designer position, or in my fat hopes, junior art director. Screw this. I’m boss now LOL.
  2. Spend more times with my parents. Much improvement as compared to last year, and I see myself spending more time with them when I leave my job next week.
  3. Get an advanced diver cert. DONE.
  4. Get a little lamb LOL. (You’ll know what when I do.) It’s the thing you see above! Because scooter in Mandarin is known as 小绵羊 (little lamb), and ya, I know it sounds kinda act cute but IDC.
  5. Exercise at least 2 times a week. (Er, failed BIG time. Shall work on it for the next half year.)
  6. Hit target weight. (Same as above.)
  7. Travel alone, maybe? (Maybe? Perhaps? Don’t know? Humji.)
  8. Create more personal works. (Did some, but need moreeee!)
  9. Sign up for Yoga lessons. (No money yet lei.)
  10. Save more more more! (I already say no money liao.)
  11. Live for myself. YES! Enjoying every single bit :D


Yea, that’s about it! This was intended to be a short post initially but oh wells. I am so looking forward to Thurs and Fri night cos’ I’m meeting Mighty + Orangees! It’s been a while since I last hung out with my friends omg no life.

But truth is, I’ve resigned. Been so ultra superbly busy lately that I’ve neglected my family, friends, and this virtual space of mine. So after much considerations, I decided to do it. Now I’m counting down to three more weeks, with anticipation and a heavy heart. I’ll miss my awesome colleagues :’(

After I break free from the full-time advertising cycle, I’m just gonna chill, freelance, catch up with sleep before jumping into anything else.
